On patience
The hardest part of this work isn't teaching someone fractions or essay structure. It's waiting, quietly, while a student figures it out on their own.
A lot of tutors want to show mastery. They jump in with the answer to keep momentum. The student nods, copies the steps, and walks away feeling more confused than before.
Patience isn't passivity. It's careful attention, moment by moment. Noticing when a student is about to get it. Noticing when they've stopped following. Noticing when what they actually need is a five minute pause, not another explanation.
Every student is made differently. What works for one child's math brain won't work for another. My job is to figure that out, not fast but carefully, so we're building on what's actually there.
I try to bring the same posture to every session. Calm. Present. Slow when it needs to be slow. Parents sometimes tell me their kid was surprised to learn that tutoring could be like this. I wish more of it was.
